Second Annual Variety Show Was a First Class Success
by Mackenzie Dunn
It
is said that variety is the spice of life, and the second annual St. Tom’s Variety Show, held on February 18th,
certainly proved that point. The show, sponsored by Tom’s Leadership Council
and the Appalachia
group, was held as a fundraiser for the spring break service trip to Appalachian Kentucky.
There
was standing room only in the St. Tom’s Student Center,
as both students and parishioners arrived to support the show. Some audience favorites included the popular campus acapella
groups, A Minor and Rubyfruit, a demonstration by the UConn Vaulting Team featuring Sara Shannon, and a heartfelt rendition
of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” performed by Lauren Schmidt and Jeff Corbishley. The variety show also
featured the tropical sounds of the UConn Steel Drum performers, including our own Colleen Morris, the “Rhapsody for
Clarinet” performed by Liz Gagnon, and the vocal stylings of “That 70s Band” with the Appalachia
group’s advisor, George Collins. Erin Cullen, Kristine Pion, and Terrie
Judge got everyone in the Southern spirit with The Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces,” while poet Bryan Stolz
and singer/songwriter Leah Phifer gave the evening a coffee-house feel. The highly anticipated TLC Finale, with its masterfully
choreographed dance routine, was a memorable ending to the night.
The
entire evening was a resounding success, and left everyone looking forward to next year’s annual St. Tom’s Variety
Show.
